Some of the most important American writers in the 1920s was F. Scott Fitzgerald, one of the most popular writers of the 1920s, published The Great Gatsby in 1925. The novel deals with issues of decadence and excess and is widely interpreted as a cautionary tale. Another tremendously popular writer of the day was Ernest Hemingway. Hemingway, who witnessed the horrors of World War I firsthand, wrote short stories in a simplified, minimalist style. He lived an adventurous life, and he typically dealt with themes of struggle, courage and loss.

I agree with what you said about Hemingway, he did live an adventurous life, witnessing both WWI and WW2 firsthand, and winning two awards, The Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and Nobel Prize in Literature and he did deal with struggle which he put into his writing, but the struggle also showed when he was put in a mental health clinic for wanting to commit suicide, and then 2 days after he was released he actually did kill himself.

The most prominent and or or important writers in the 1920s were; Langston Hughes, F. Scott Fitzgerald, James Weldon Johnson, Zora Neale Hurston, E. E. Cummings, Georgia O' O'Keeffe, Ernest Hemingway and many more. These writers sought out descriptively the essential view of society in America seeking and outdrawing the vivid truths that were occurring all around. Langston Hughes of all wrote about Harlem's conditions and said upon what he saw and felt that he was called upon instincts to bring out the truths that all African American faced from the white race population. This roaring writer wrote of all anguish feelings that all African American faced due to the wanting of equality. James W. Johnson wrote the lyrics for the song "Lift Every Voice and Sing" which is believed to be African American national Anthem. He also wrote a book called "Th e Autobiography of an Ex- Colored Man" which was based about African American trying to escape discrimination while trying to survive. Zora Neale Hurston wrote the book "Their Eyes Were Watching God" in which she depict each character with a certain voice for they each were to be looked upon as African American given the voice to speak their feelings and let all know their anguish.Cummings, Hemingway and many more of the "Lost Generation " group differed their writing changing how Literature is seen today. Cummings wrote and wrote going against the proper way to write not capitalizing and many more. Cummings also wrote a book regulating how young people of age felt post war. Fitzgerald wrote the Great Gatsby comparing and analyzing the differences from race and the influential fact that Jazz had upon certain race and ethnicity. these writers showed negative views of society by oppressing one side of an aspect. so based on whomever wrote anything it mattered how the words were written and why such things are said

I found your information very helpful with knowing about each writer, except for the fact that James W. Johnson's book"The Autobiography of an Ex-Colored Man" wasn't about an African American trying to escape discrimination. He was actually a boy with a African mother and a white father, but at his school his principal sees him only as African American because his mother is, but i wouldn't say he is being discriminated. He is hired to play music for a millionaire, attends a great school, and even ends up marrying a white woman and having 2 children. In the end of the novel, he claims he is glad he decided to pass as a white man, for his children's sake.

I really like this thread that you two engaged in. I haven't read the "Autobiography" but I'm going to put it on my read list. It's interest ing that the author chose to have his main character deny his identity as a black man in favor of "passing" as white, but he also admits to the sadness of that denial.
What do you think the author is saying? He is certainly not endorsing the "passing" life. The main character gives up his talent as a musician so as to hide his color and lives a lie.

I found this article very interesting and helpful. What helped me the most was that Langston Hughes of all wrote about Harlem's conditions and said upon what he saw and felt that he was called upon instincts to bring out the truths that all African American faced from the white race population. This made me understand it a lot more.

Dahana, your blog post was comprehensive. I agree that Langston Hughes was one of the most prominent writers of the “Harlem Renaissance.” He demonstrated the best of African American culture. Hughes wanted to prove that there was beauty in his culture. E. E. Cummings deviated from proper grammar in his writing. His writing pertained to feelings after the war. There was a part in The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald where race and prejudice were mentioned by a character. The novel also portrayed the undesirable parts of society. Each author tried to convey their ideas of society through their works.

In E.E. Cummings’ poetry, his style does deviate from the traditional form of this writing. Portrayed in the poem “Buffalo Bill,” his style is flexible reflecting his own persona. His work had been heavily influenced near the end of the Great War during his studying of art in Paris. Nevertheless, briefly describing said writers within your blog, it is agreeable to realize the purpose behind a work of art. Despite any form of the artwork takes, traditional or not, the reason and influence it portrays is a key to understanding writers of this decade. This includes those you have listed such as Langston Hughes, F. Scott Fitzgerald, James Weldon Johnson, Zora Neale Hurston, E. E. Cummings, Georgia O' O'Keeffe, and Ernest Hemingway. It would be appreciated to work on transitioning from each topic to the other, but the criteria within your blog had been informative!

In the 1920s there were many important American writers who contributed to the era. The first American writer was Bruce Barton. He wrote a book that was called "The Man Nobody Knows." His main character in his book is Jesus Christ and in the book Jesus Christ helps twelve men form an company that conquers the world. The second and third American writers of the time was Gertrude Stein, and Ernest Hemingway. Gertrude Stein called the people who just came back from the war the lost generation since they had nothing to do now that the war was over. Ernest Hemingway wrote the novel, "A Farewell to Arms in 1929. In his novel an American officer who is fighting in Europe leaves the war early with a nurse he fell in love with. The fourth and fifth American writers of the time was Sinclair Lewis and F. Scott Fitzgerald. Sinclair Lewis was the first American to receive a noble prize in literature. And Fitzgerald wrote a book called, "The Great Gatsby" in which he criticizes the American desire to be rich. And finally the last American writer of the time was Langston Hughes. He was able to describe how much he is proud to be himself.
Many of the writers of this time expressed negative views of society. This is because all the writers thought there needed to be a change in society. They needed to draw attention to the negative side of society so they expressed all the negativity associated with society in their books to draw people`s attention to the situation.

Great job, Priya! I always enjoy reading your blog posts because they are very informative. Gertrude Stein served as a source of inspiration to the authors you talked about. She is also considered to be the mother of "The Lost Generation". As a matter of fact, she coined the term. Your comment about authors drawing attention to the negative side of society reminded me of the muckrakers from the Progressive Era who exposed social issues and corruption in an effort to reform society and the political system.

The 1920's was one of the most active and important periods in the more serious arts. Writers, painters, and other artists produced some of the greatest work in the nation's history. One writer was Sinclair Lewis. He was the first American to win the Nobel Prize for Literature. Lewis wrote about Americans living in the towns and villages in the central part of the United States. Many of the people in his books were foolish men and women with empty values. They chased after money and popularity. In his famous book "Main Street," Lewis joked about and criticized small-town business owners. Another major writer was F. Scott Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald wrote especially about rich Americans searching for happiness and new values. His books were filled with people who rejected traditional beliefs. His book "The Great Gatsby" is considered today to be one of the greatest works in the history of American writing. These artists had a negative view on society because they were troubled deeply by the changes they saw. They believed that Americans had become too interested in money and wealth. They felt a need to protest the way the world was changing around them.

Especially how they describe it in their book. 1920's might seen the one of the most interest year in history but can be describe also as depressed after what writer are writing in their story. If the citizens of the 1920s listened to what the authors of the stories messages were truly about then the great depression wouldn`t have happened. People wanted to make money fast and simple so they relied on stocks. People invested huge amounts of money in the stock market hoping they will make a lot of money. But when the stock market came unexpectedly came crashing down almost everyone went bankrupt. Stores and companies had to reduce workers pay, and cut back their hours. People were getting paid less which meant they had to use their money only when they needed it. This affected the economy greatly.

Kayla, your blog post answered the prompt in a concise and eloquent manner. I agree that F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote about Americans trying to find happiness in their lives. They did this by rejecting traditional beliefs such as staying loyal to a romantic partner. In the novel, people would commit adultery. The Great Gatsby is still a prominent book in the school curriculum. People became too interested in money; this interest would lead to greed and corruption. Sinclair Lewis also criticized people and their pursuit for money. Money was controlling the lives of the people. According to these authors, a change in society was required.

I entirely agree on your writing of the negativity in literature in the 1920's. It was truly a time of joy for some but at the same time misery for others and literature at this speaks the volumes of the truth that society had tried to hide behind the sparkling parties and money. The 1920 literary style portrays the feeling of the change going around and just how 'depressive' it may be.

While I agree with you on everything else Swati, it was actually Francis Scott Key who'd written the Star Spangled Banner back in 1814 as a poem. In 1931 it was set to music and became our national anthem. The poem was originally written due to the fact that Key had witnessed the Maryland fort being bombarded by the British in the War of 1812

Prominent American Writers
The 1920s gave birth to a new American culture that consisted of new expressions in art and literature. Society went through some drastic changes. Writers drew inspiration from their observations of society. Writing was a means of displaying an author’s ideas. Some of the most prominent writers during the 1920s were F. Scott Fitzgerald, Langston Hughes, and Bruce Barton.
F. Scott Fitzgerald was known for his novel The Great Gatsby. The novel follows the experiences of Nick Carraway. Nick meets a wealthy man named Jay Gatsby and gets involved in his affairs. Jay Gatsby represented the excess that capitalism could create because of his wealth. He also represented the sense of alienation that people felt after the war. Throughout the novel, the usage of alcohol and the act of adultery were seen (Brinkley 614).
The “Harlem Renaissance” occurred in the 1920s. During the time, blacks wanted to prove that their race and heritage were worthy of respect. They demonstrated the prosperity of their culture. Langston Hughes was able to represent the movement with one sentence. He said, “I am a Negro and beautiful.” The color of his skin did not suppress his talents. Jazz was used in his poetry (631).
Bruce Barton was in the advertising business. During his career, he wrote The Man Nobody Knows. In his book, Jesus Christ was portrayed as a salesman. He brought his disciples from the bottom to the top of a powerful organization. This portrayal of Jesus Christ was meant to demonstrate consumerism. Barton wanted people to follow Jesus’ example; this would lead to a rewarding life (623).
F. Scott Fitzgerald, Langston Hughes, and Bruce Barton all wrote about what was happening in society. Society was portrayed negatively because the public needed to become aware of what their society became. It was a warning that needed to be listened to by the people. There could have been a potential downfall in life if corruption was allowed to continue. F. Scott Fitzgerald demonstrated the degradation of morality in society. Some parts of society were portrayed in a positive manner. Langston Hughes offered pride to African American culture. Bruce Barton wanted to have people enjoy their lives. The 1920s created distinct time period in American history.

You have also explained many examples on how writers expressed the views of society during the 1920s. One of the examples I found interesting was Bruce Barton’s The Man Know Nobody Knows. Through Barton’s writings, he expressed the need to have Christianity in one’s life to be successful by portraying Jesus as a wealthy salesman.

Indeed, The Great Gatsby is prominent for its remarkable reflection of the 1920s. However, the people within Gatsby’s parties, due to his wealth, emphasize the philosophy of desiring to be known and striving to compete for success. Agreeing that he represents the need for excess influenced by capitalism, Jay Gatsby had been a source of extravagant parties that a variety of people attended. Withal, he hosted public parties, and all classes of people came. As a result, this may portray the idea of becoming lost in the excess and eccentric environment. Living no longer without a purpose, out of World War I, Gertrude Stein summarized this state of mind leading to the “Lost Generation.”
Throughout that novel, there was little significance to females besides their beauty and physical existence. Despite women aspiring to gain equivalent status as men during the 1920s, The Great Gatsby portrays a medium towards both genders. By the end of the novel, facing the distraught events of murder due to a car accident and vengeance by George Wilson, all main characters were lost. Unable to take responsibility of their actions, this theme reflects upon the reality of the 1920s. As you have explained, among a variety of other works, this mentality, unless changed, lead to their own demise. In reality, this conclusion would be the end of the roaring 1920s to the Great Depression.

Is it a coincidence that the character is named Wilson? Why do you think Fitzgerald used this character to be the instrument of Gatsby's downfall? Fitzgerald, like Caraway, clearly loves the character Gatsby and yet he destroys the thing he loves. But he fails to hold the female characters of Daisy and Jordan to account for their misdeeds. Daisy gets away with manslaughter and Jordan is an enabler for adultery. What does THAT say about Fitzgerald's view of women?

During the 1920's writers wrote from their own experience. Whether it was about experiences World War 1 or chasing the American Dream most of the inspiration from the most prominent writers during the 1920's like Sinclair Lewis and F.Scott Fitzgerald came from their own experiences or observations. Many people may not know that F.Scott Fitzgerald wrote the lyrics to the Star Spangled Banner which is ironic because of the way he potrays and views American Society in his famous novel, The Great Gatsby.
In the Great Gatsby F. Scott Fitzgerald writes about the American Dream and about money and power consuming the characters in his book. For example Tom Buchannan's wealth has rendered him cruel, arrogant, and immoral; he is driven entirely by power. This exposes to us that Tom is a cruel and immoral individual because of wealth, and that beyond a doubt he has been persuaded and corrupted by the greed of money. Which expresses how many people were during that time period and situations that they experienced because of that.Another character, Gatsby newly founded wealth, which has no foundation of any legitimate business, is portrayed throughout the book as a mystery. Although this Gatsby is as obsessed with the girl of his dreams as Nick believes, he also appears to be someone who is more intent upon his own objectives and more manipulative then Nick comprehends. This Gatsby is at once more sinister and more believably unbelievable, a true product of the Prohibition's criminal conditions, this shows us that Gatsby's involvement with bootlegging as well as other illegal business causes him to be engulfed with greed and power which distracting him from his main goal of winning daisy back. This all shows us that wealth can change and corrupt individuals and put them in a disillusionment no matter where they came from or why they wish to obtain it. In the end Fitzgerald says that obtaining wealth is a part of life that can change and most of the time destroy the moral dignities of man and give him a selfish and corrupted view of the world as if wealth was a disease upon the minds of men.

Your blog post is well-written and it caught my eye. I like the way you organized it and your information seems quite accurate. I agree with most of what you said. The one thing, however, that I must point out is that F. Scott Fitzgerald did not write the Star Spangled Banner. This is explains why the views in the national anthem and the views in his novel are very different. Our national anthem was written in the year 1814 by a man named Francis Scott Key. He shared the same name as the author of The Great Gatsby, whose full name was Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald. F. Scott Fitzgerald was born in 1896 ergo there is no way he could have written something that was penned in 1814. On the other hand, Francis Scott Key was actually related to F. Scott Fitzgerald. The prominent author of the 1920s was named after his second cousin (three times removed). He was also related to Mary Surratt, a conspirator in the assassination of Abraham Lincoln.

Your post offered a great deal of information and i agree with many of the ideas in the passage. The story of "The Great Gatsby" reflects a lot of his views of the era. The citizens living in West Egg represent the newly rich, while citizens in East Egg represent the old aristocracy. The Valley of ashes between West Egg and New York City is a long stretch of desolate land created by the dumping of industrial ashes. It represents the moral that results from the uninhibited pursuit of wealth, as the rich indulge themselves with regard for nothing but their own pleasure. Over the course of his career, Fitzgerald wrote four complete novels, while a fifth, partially completed at the time of his death, was published posthumously.

The 1920's was an active time for many writer's, along with other professionals in other arts. Among these writers, one of the most prominent was F. Scott Fitzgerald, who is mostly famous for her book "The Great Gatsby". Fitzgerald commonly wrote about the rich society in America and searching for new happiness. Another writer known as Sinclair Lewis. Lewis was known for being the first American writer to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for literature. He often wrote of business owners, however his work was very powerful as it showed them as unwise people with empty goals. This showed business owners as people who were unknowing of what was truly morally correct.

I agree with you that F. Scoot Fitzgerald and Sinclair Lewis are prominent writers in the 1920's. Fitzgerald negative effect of society was materialism. Rich people are a prime example of materialism. Sinclair Lewis has to be a prominent writer because he won a Nobel Peace Prize. I find it interesting that Sinclair sees business owners as unknowing of what is morally correct.

One of the most prominent writers of the 1920s was Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald. F. Scott Fitzgerald went to Princeton University, where he studied and progressed as a writer. Writers like Fitzgerald received negative views because he defines the 1920s as an era of little social and moral values, evidenced in greed and an empty pursuit of pleasure. Fitzgerald displays the newly rich people as being vulgar, flashy, and lacking in social graces. He portrays the large rich families as careless rich people with very little family values. The 1920s is expressed as an era with an overabundance of wealth, and caused a lot of people to illegally become wealthy. Fitzgerald also says the working class is very unappreciated and is viewed as lifeless.

I agree with your "response" about F. Scott Fitzgerald. His outstanding novel "The Great Gatsby" really does point up how blind the American people were in the 1920's. People just worried about money most of the time. They forgot about family morals that in my opinion are the most important things in life.

F. Scott Fitzgerald did a good job of capturing the era of excess. This is really evident in the party scenes of The Great Gatsby where excessive alcohol consumption and promiscuity was portrayed and heavily implied.

I too concur with your reaction above. Money and riches was the main thing on individuals' psyches and diverted them from the more prominent things in life which is the reason why Fitzgerald depicted them as obscene and showy.

The 1920s was a very prolific decade in regard to literature. Authors such as F. Scott Fitzgerald, Robert Frost, Sinclair Lewis, Ernest Hemingway, Langston Hughes, T.S. Eliot, and Zora Neale Hurston were among the most notable of their time period. These writers expressed their feelings about the changes in society. It seemed as though people were saying goodbye to their moral virtues and hello to reckless behavior. Young women wore more revealing clothes and had shorter hair. The new attitudes they upheld were considered unladylike. Teenagers embraced personal freedom. People were only interested in living for the moment and having a good time. It was evident that American lifestyle would never be the same. Prohibition didn't stop many people from drinking and it resulted in an increase in organized crime. Materialism was ruining lives, according to some writers. They preferred not to be obsessed with wealth and would rather seek the meaning of life. Most, if not all, of the authors mentioned above disapproved of the new behavior and would likely shake their heads at the drastic changes in society. They expressed their negative views because they were trying very hard to hold on to their dear traditional values.

Paola your blog was very interesting to read. You stated many relevant facts about the era that I did not realize made it a different era that had ever affected America which made it significant . There was definitely an essence of rebellion that was taking place during the 1920s which influenced most of the American society especially when Prohibition was taking place. Also, I do agree with your answer that their negative views during this time was because of their own moral and traditional values.

Similar to what you stated, the 1920's was truly an age of dramatic social and political change. Women started dressing as flappers. America was undergoing an immense amount of changes during the 1920s which influenced not only politics but the art and culture at this time as well. Many authors such as F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway, and Sinclair Lewis wrote novels inspired by this era which later on made them become one of the most famous authors in English literature. The Great Gatsby by Fitzgerald focuses on American greed and isolation which were factors seen in American society at this time. Alienation or isolation was commonly seen by soldiers who had come back from World War I and felt that their life had no purpose which gave them the title of the “Lost Generation”. However, in Hemingway’s novel A Farewell to Arms describes the situation of a World War I soldier and his decision to leave the war because he felt there was no reason for him to be in the war, as opposed to the other soldier’s idea of serving the war being their only purpose. Sinclair Lewis, a Nobel Prize winner, wrote novels ridiculing certain aspects of the American society such as alienation, religion, or politics.

The 1920's gave birth to a multitude of writers, most within their writing proposed negative views on the society they lived in. Among these writers was a rather prominent writer, T.S Elliot. Elliot was a poet and a playwright and is widely known for his work "The Wasteland". Another prominent writer in this time was F. Scott Fitzgerald who wrote "The Great Gatsby", which today is still a huge read among people. Both these writers have expressed negative views within their writing. In Elliot's "The Wasteland" Elliot speaks of living in a culture that is decayed and is forced to live with reminders of its former glory. In F. Scott Fitzgerald's "The Great Gatsby" he criticizes the American dream and has us question whether or not pursuing money is that of a noble thing.

During the 1920's America's culture was evolving. People began to point out moral problems that were just wrong on behalf of the American people. Author F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote the novel "The Great Gatsby". After the reader has read the book, he/she would realize that Fitzgerald was portraying how people were during this time era. All people wanted was money, and how they can get it the easiest way. People mostly gained their money illegally by bootlegging and illegal gun trade.Another promient writer during the time period was Bruce Barton who wrote a story about Jesus becoming a sales man. Within the 1920s, there comes an uprising of many important American writers, such as Ernest Hemmingway, H. L. Mencken, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and Langston Hughes. Some of these writers have expressed negative connotations of society during their time period. F. Scott Fitzgerald is a well-known author of “The Great Gatsby” and has his work put into many school’s curriculums. With in this novel, Fitzgerald talks about the wealth within the 1920s rich Americans, and how they searched for new morale and happiness. During the 1920s, a type of character has evolved where money was center of everything, which Fitzgerald used to bring negative views to society. Another writer was Langston Hughes, who wrote during the Harlem Renaissance. The Harlem Renaissance was a time frame in which African American culture has arisen. During this period, African Americans such as Langston Hughes used their writings to show whites that they needed respect too. These authors often tried to express that the color of your skin doesn’t show what you’re really capable of doing. Using the power of writing, these authors expressed that society is failing and that the public need to do something.

The “New” Era: Henry Lewis Mencken
Upon the occurring changes toward millions of Americans during the 1920s, this change influenced the now called, “New Era.” After experiencing the horrific events of the Great War, people required new ideas and ways of living. As a result, a variety of people took interest in the new popular culture. Withal, writers, painters, and other artists produced serious works reveling in this era; they portrayed the good and bad of this time period. With faith in the country’s business leaders and economic system, artists, such as H.L. Mencken, depicted a darker view of their society.
Mencken had been a newspaper writer from the eastern city of Baltimore, but he mercilessly attacked the values of Americans during that decade. However, born on September 12, 1880, he worked as editor of The Baltimore Sun, The Smart Set magazine, and The American Mercury (The Editors of Encyclopedia Britannica). Hoping to become a newspaper reporter, he was given the options to work for the family tobacco business or go to college. After his father’s death in 1899, he pursued his dream job (The Editors of Encyclopedia Britannica). Throughout his writing career, he not only critiqued literature, but he questioned popular political, social, and cultural views.
Mortifying traditional Americans with his strong criticism of religion and business leader, they attacked H.L. Mencken and categorized him as a person who pursued words of treason. Nevertheless, his works influence U.S. fiction throughout the 1920s such as Inherit the Wind (The Editors of Encyclopedia Britannica). Nearing the start of the 1920s, in 1919, he published The American Language to sum American expression and idioms of the time. As a result, during his time of death, he had been known as the leading authority on the language of the United States of America (The Editors of Encyclopedia Britannica).
Unfortunately, multiple writers of the 1920s had been forgotten by many Americans over time, yet his style stood independent of the traditional American writing. His strong views of life were different from most Americans as well. Influenced over the German philosopher, Friedrich Nietzsche, this resulted in his works and style of writing (The Editors of Encyclopedia Britannica). Nietzsche’s philosophy included the belief of will power to be described as striving to reach the highest possible position in life; a common theme is the overall act of being selfish and greedy (Magnus). The German’s influence resulted in a movement in philosophy and literary criticism. Throughout his life, Friedrich’s motives were to unravel the traditional Western religion, morality, and philosophy (Magnus). Thus, H.L. Mencken’s literary works reveled in the criticisms of specific topics such as racism, elitisms, democracy, Anglo-Saxons, and Jews. Dying in 1956, Henry remains to be known for his literary criticism, activism, and journalism.

The 1920s was considered to be a small renaissance for all types of art. New categories of painting were developed such as surrealism and cubism while Jazz became mainstream. Literature also witnessed an explosion of new and controversial writing. These works were published by names such as F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway, and more. Their works were bleak and represented the reality that they lived in. This reality was riddled with wounds from the First World War and loosening morals. All of these themes can be found in a variety of writers from this specific era. For example, F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby, portrays the 1920s as an era of excess where people throw extravagant parties every week. It also shows excessive alcohol consumption, adultery, and criminal activity. The story of this novel might be fiction but the themes that it touch on are very real. These writers showed a heavy dissatisfaction with society because of a culmination of many events. After WW1 ended, soldiers came home with a completely different perspective of life. Their allegiance to their country and what it stood for was tested by the gruesome reality of war. Ernest Hemingway was one of those soldiers that came home. He went on to write many pieces of literature that portrayed war and society in a negative manner. The 1920s was also an era of progressivism where ethics became looser than ever. Everything was larger than ever and can be attributed to the dissatisfaction with society. In closing, the important writers of the 1920s had a negative view of society because of the changing morals and the effects of WW1.

After World War I, American society changed radically. The society and its moral values declined due to the economical success. Due to this decline a term was coined to name that generation. They were named the "Lost Generation." In his proclaimed novel, The Great Gatsby, Francis Scott Fitzgerald writes about characters who show signs of decreased morality from previous years. All of his characters represent the "Lost Generation" and all they cared about was money and nothing else. Another notable author of the time is Langston Hughes from the Harlem Renaissance. Your review of the themes set in Fitzgerald's, The Great Gatsby, were spot on. I couldn't have said it better myself. The idea that Americans became more greedy than ever before were probably set by influences of post World War I trauma, bank collapses, and the government's restrictions on alcohol where Americans probably found more peace from than anything else. The loss of happiness, money, and alcohol led many Americans at the time to seek the lavish lifestyles that very few could obtain without being born into wealth and royalty. However, one could see that struggles make for creative minds as Langston Hughes pulled out of the Harlem Renaissance a great deal of classic jazz poetry. He had managed to stand out even though the odds were stacked against him not only by his skin color, but also the demand to work other jobs just to live.

The 1920s was a dynamic decade described by colossal change. Of course, the craftsmanship, writing and pop culture of the decade were soaked up with topics of innovation. Maybe "experimental" is the most ideal word to portray the masterful and social patterns connected with the 'Roaring Twenties.'

As in the workmanship world, artistic imaginatively took off all through the 1920s. The excessively formal styles connected with Victorianism were supplanted with a more straightforward, popularity based style. In abstract circles, thwarted expectation taking after World War I brought about a few authors to concentrate on the loathsomeness and worthlessness of war. Other normal topics in 1920s writing included sexuality and the human ability to look for joy and bliss.

F. Scott Fitzgerald, a standout amongst the most prominent authors of the 1920s, distributed The Great Gatsby in 1925. The novel manages issues of wantonness and overabundance and is generally translated as a wake up call. Another massively prominent essayist of the day was Ernest Hemingway.

Hemingway, who saw the detestations of World War I firsthand, composed short stories in a streamlined, moderate style. He carried on with an audacious life, and he regularly managed subjects of battle, valor and misfortune. Among Hemingway's most well known works are The Sun Also Rises, A Farewell to Arms and For Whom the Bell Tolls. Other prominent journalists of the 1920s incorporate T. S. Eliot, Ezra Pound and John Dos Passos.

The Harlem Renaissance delivered its own particular slew of African-American essayists. Among the most surely understood was author and artist, Langston Hughes. Other understood journalists incorporate Jean Toomer, Zora Neale Hurston, James Weldon Johnson and W. E. B. Du Bois.

The 1920’s was one of the most active and important periods of literature and art. Writers, painters, and other artists produced some of the greatest work in the nation’s history which we admire today. The American novelists and poets are a perfect example of what was known as the "Lost Generation”: a generation who criticized rather than romanticized the flaws of society. Within their works, they revealed the bad and good of this time period. Two widely known writers of the 1920’s are F. Scott Fitzgerald, and Ernest Hemingway. Ernest Hemingway witnessed World War I first hand, and as a result, wrote short stories about the experiences. His short stories were written in a simplified manner. Typically, the themes of his stories were focused on bravery, struggle, and destruction.. Hemingway’s most popular works are “The Sun Also Rises” and “A Farewell to Arms”. F. Scott Fitzgerald is widely regarded as one of the greatest American writers of the 20th century. He is the author of The Great Gatsby wrote themes to show the excessive materialism in the wealthy classes and how that effected American society. The twenties gave Fitzgerald the settings for his greatest works. Fitzgerald's view of the Twenties was serious and complex, for he recognized the glamour as well as the waste, the charm as well as the self-destruction. Fitzgerald and Hemingway, as well as many other writers, wrote about the negative things within society in their works because they believed a change in society was needed. The writers wanted to draw attention to problems in society so that they could be resolved. In the twenties, the writers truly believed that all society cared for was money and luxuries. To try to make a change, they tried to reveal the reality to the world within their writing.

Something interesting to note about most of the writers at the time knew or met one another due to the fact that they all agreed on their negative views for society. When their countries joined wars, most of the authors felt disembodied from their nation which caused them to write. T.S. Eliot was a prominent author who wrote poetry that were all twisted by themes of Modernism. In the 1920's during a tough time in his life where his marriage was failing and the war practically just ended, Eliot wrote The Waste Land which was seen as confusing at the time, mainly due to the allusions drawn from Eastern philosophies and writings which were primarily unknown. However, The Waste Land wouldn't have been published had it not been for Ezra Pound. Ezra Pound was a poet and critic who spent time with Eliot editing his work. Eliot praised him calling his editing, "critical genius." Ezra Pound was a strange character however who's mind was warped by the war and had blamed capitalism for this. In later years, he became associated with Fascism and supported Mussolini and Hitler with their endeavors. This didn't happen very long after Pound's long-lasting friendship with Ernest Hemingway, a writer most famous for A Farewell to Arms. Hemingway became Pound's pupil and had went to Pound for any problems he faced. Hemingway was shaped so heavily on Pound that much of Hemingway's works reflected Pound's ideals. Hemingway also only had the absolute best to say about Pound such as, "He defends [his friends] when they are attacked, he gets them into magazines and out of jail. ... He introduces them to wealthy women. He gets publishers to take their books. He sits up all night with them when they claim to be dying ... he advances them hospital expenses and dissuades them from suicide." Such things could only be said about truly great people. I think that it is so amazing about how small a world these authors lived in where there connections seemed endless and everlasting by the strong bonds they shared through unpopular views of what they felt were the wrongful societies that they lived in.

This was a really good post, Lillian. I would not confuse Hemingway's friendship with Pound as an endorsement of his politics, though. Hemingway and Pound are both known for simple sentences and "economy of language". They both were heavily invested in their masculinity, but while Pound turned to Fascism, Hemingway is clearly an individualist.

Hughes is known as a leader of the Harlem Renaissance. He mostly wrote about the lives of the working-class blacks in America and portrayed it as full of struggle, joy, laughter, and music. Most, of the authors mentioned above didn't like the new behavior and would be disappointed at the drastic changes in society. They expressed their negative views because they were trying hard to hold on to their traditional values.

One of the most prominent, influential writers during the 1920s was F. Scott Fitzgerald. He is most commonly known as the author of the Great Gatsby; however, he wrote about various topics that were occurring around him. Fitzgerald wrote about wealth, his dreams and goals and even prohibition. His stories include characters built off of their wealth which negatively portrays this era. However, Fitzgerald simply created his characters and plotlines simply from experience.

Ernest Hemingway was one of the most important writers in the 1920s. He witnessed horrors of world war 1 so he wrote short stories about them. He lived an adventurous life dealt with struggles, loss and courage. His economical and understated style had a strong influence on the 20th century fiction. E produced most of his work between the mid 1920s and mid 1950s. There were many other writers during this time that were very important in literature today. These writers expressed negative views of society because of their personal views on life and what they've experienced and seen first hand.
