Guide for Writing Your “Monopoly” Essay

Analyze your experiences, individually and collectively at your board, playing Monopoly and Inequality Monopoly in light of the course thus far. Discuss / explain your experiences and set up the analysis. Include all of the following from the chapter:
• Social Stratification
• Caste vs. Class Systems
• Wealth/Power/Prestige
• American Class System
• Social Mobility
First Paragraph – (Context)Before you played the game, what did you already know from reading the book and from class discussions about the American Class system? Is it a Caste or Class System? What’s the difference? (Thesis) What did you discover, AFTER playing the game, about the ability to “Win” in monopoly?
Second Paragraph-– How does the game compare to the pursuit of Wealth, Power, and Prestige in American Society? What makes the game fun?
Third Paragraph– How was Social Mobility affected by the class structure in the game? Use your log/chart to support your findings. How does this compare to social mobility statistics described in the book?
Closing Paragraph– Restate your opinion about social mobility in American Society. Is there anything that could mitigate social problems caused by stratification?
